SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Thousands of government workers in Puerto Rico have launched a 24-hour strike across the U.S. territory to protest a fiscal emergency law that targets bonuses and benefits, among other things.
Union leaders representing workers from public corporations including the island's state-owned power and water and sewer company organized the strike that began on Wednesday.
The strike is one of several that have occurred in recent weeks as the island struggles to emerge from a nearly decade-long economic slump.
Garcia had signed the fiscal emergency law last month to ensure $250 million in savings as Puerto Rico tries to reduce $73 billion in public debt.
