Puerto Rico officials will lobby Congress for statehood

Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rossello appointed three officials on Monday to the island's Democracy Commission, which is tasked with lobbying Congress to move on its statehood request.
Former Gov. Luis Fortuno, two-star Gen. Felix Santoni, and Republican National Committeewoman Zoraida Fonalledas will sit on the commission, bringing the total to seven members.
The three new appointees will join former Gov. Carlos Romero Barcelo, former Gov. Pedro Rossello Nevares, former Puerto Rican Senate President Charles Rodriguez, and Baseball Hall of Famer Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez.
The move is the island government's latest step to push for statehood after a June plebiscite concluded 97 percent of voters want to become the 51st state. Less than one-quarter of voters turned out to vote the fifth-ever referendum.
