Atkins awarded GEC contract by Puerto Rico Ports Authority

The Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) has awarded Atkins a general engineering consultant (GEC) contract for its airport grant projects throughout Puerto Rico.

Atkins will help PRPA engineers, planners, and operations staff plan, design, procure, and supervise infrastructure projects for the next five years.

L. Joe Boyer, Atkins CEO, North America, says: “We have a long-term professional relationship with the PRPA, having designed and planned projects at nine out of the 10 PRPA-owned airports in Puerto Rico over the last 16 years.

“The award of this new contract will further strengthen our relationship with the PRPA and enable us to bring a world-class team of experts to its grant projects.”

The PRPA fist selected Atkins’ Puerto Rico-based business unit, Atkins Caribe, as PRPA’s GEC in 1997 with the company then reselected multiple times to provide airport planning, engineering, and construction services for both commercial and general aviation airports.

Atkins has also completed numerous projects to help PRPA’s engineering bureau execute its capital improvement program (CIP) and develop maritime transportation facilities and airfields.

The firm’s aviation business sector manager, Justin Jones, PE, explains: “Our clear understanding of PRPA’s project requirements, and our previous experience on similar projects has enabled us to develop a team that is qualified to tackle the projects that will result from this contract.

“We’ve worked with PRPA since the late 1990s, and we’re proud to serve as an extension to their staff in all disciplines necessary to support Puerto Rico’s aviation industry.”

In 2008, Atkins played a key role in helping PRPA transform the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station (a U.S. navy base) into the José Aponte de la Torre Airport, a civilian airport located in the town of Ceiba.

Atkins also recently served as GEC and designer for two major runway projects at Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, total reconstruction of Runway 10-28, and improvements to the runway safety area (RSA) on Runway 8-26.
