El proyecto de explotación minera en Puerto Rico (1962-1968): Nacimiento de la conciencia ambiental moderna [The mining project in Puerto Rico (1962-1968): Birth of modern environmental awareness] by Jorge Colón Rivera, Félix Córdova Iturregui, and José Córdova Iturregui (Huracán, 2014).

Description: The project of developing copper mines in the region of Lares, Utuado and Adjuntas, which was discussed intensively during the 1960s, was tremendously important in the history of Puerto Rico. On the one hand, it broke the myth of the scarcity of mineral resources on the island and raised questions about the modes of development brought about by Operation Bootstrap in a financial boom and moment of economic expansion on a world scale. On the other hand, it brought about a serious threat to the integrity of the island through environmental destruction in one of the most scenic regions of Puerto Rico.
